This month has seen us busy again with various jobs around the community, most of which were minor in nature and straight forward to resolve. As we move toward the end of another year (how fast did that one go!), I thought it a good chance to look back and cover some of the achievements and challenges we faced in 2019.

In a CFS first, a few of our members set up this fantastic photograph last month, which shows the contents of Cherry Gardens 34P. Between our procedures and the equipment shown, we are able to carry out our role in the community.
Read MoreAfter a long (and cold) winter we are finally seeing the days lengthen and the temperatures warm. During the Winter months the Cherry Gardens brigade focused our training on structural fires and car accidents, and due to the cold and wet evenings our training was frequently held in the station rather than going out into the surrounding area.

Read MoreAs a Brigade, we have a dedicated hardworking group amongst us who give their time to form the “Sturt Group Operations” team. Cherry Gardens CFS is in Region 1, which covers the Mt Lofty Ranges and Kangaroo Island, and we are in the Sturt Group.
Read MoreA Defensive Fire Training Course was recently held at the Cherry Gardens station on June 1&2 2019. Pictured is a training scenario on a venting gas bottle, which is under the control of qualified instructors. Carrying out training such as this helps keep us prepared for such events.
Read MoreIn July a few of our volunteers will be attending the Firebombing Load Supervisor & Airbase Manager training at Brukunga and then on November 3rd we will be doing our Region 1 Airbase Operator Skills Maintenance refresher training at the Cherry Gardens Air Strip.
Read MoreJust prior to ANZAC day, we were called to perhaps the biggest event in the area for many years, as shown in the aerial photo. A fire broke out to the north of the western end of Cherry Gardens Road. During de-briefs after this event we discussed any learnings. Please be aware of access to properties for the appliances – overhanging tree branches, gates not wide enough etc.

Read MoreIt’s hard to believe another year has passed by. It was certainly an eventful time for the brigade. In the past few months we’ve been fortunate to have a number of new members join us, both as firefighters and radio operators. Our station has also undergone a facelift in the last few months.
Read MoreOn Dec 9th the Air Support group held the annual training day for all members. This is where we officially open the season and refresh our skills and get our accreditation ready for the fire season ahead.
Read MoreDid you know? The Cherry Gardens airbase is one of only two Class A airbases in South Australia, both which are servicing water bombing operations in the Mt. Lofty Ranges zone. We operate independent to the local Cherry Gardens CFS Brigade although all our volunteers are registered with the brigade.
