Cherry Gardens Ironbank Recreation Ground and Club
We are a community owned sporting precinct for the local football, netball, cricket and tennis clubs. Everything you see here is 100% owned by our local community and we are a very family friendly organisation with a strong focus on junior programs where we encourage participation, gender equality, teamwork and growth of our youth in skills and ability.
The clubrooms are used most days of the week either for training, playing games in one of the sporting codes or just the local community using the oval, courts and equipment to keep fit, exercise the dog or just relax.
Meals are available on Thursday nights and after home games and everyone is welcome to join us any time.
We have a number of functions coming up throughout the season and on June 14th (a Friday) we have teamed up with our neighbours, the Blackwood Golf Course, for a club function that is open to all our players, sponsors and supporters. If any locals would also like to join in then you will be very welcome.
Our football season started on the first weekend in April. After a few long months of training, recruiting and preparation the juniors and men’s teams finally got on the oval and played footy. In 2019 we will have 8 home games and we would love to see locals come along and watch good quality local footy.
We have had trials for the winter season and teams selected. This year we are fielding 10 junior teams and 11 senior teams with games starting 27th April or 4th May. All junior matches are played on Saturday Mornings, with senior matches played Saturday afternoons.
The Recreation Ground AGM was held recently and congratulations to Andy Adams who was elected as President for the 2019 year. All other positions were filled by the incumbent committee members. Football season for us starts on April 6th at Torrens Valley but before then we will have already played a couple of trial games.
Our AGM is on 20 March. We welcome any members of the Community to come along, get involved and have your say. Each year we barely break even, costs are always going up and we struggle to maintain our assets. The last thing we want to do is hand over the grounds to the council or be forced to lock the site and only open for members.
Well Cherry Chatter readers the football season is fast approaching, and our senior players are already well into the pre-season training. The 2018 season was really a great success for the club and we are hoping and working towards 2019 being at least as good. Our Seniors are keen for “back to back” premierships.
It was good to have a break from cricket, but we're back into the swing of things with some good results already. To date our top wicket takers for the season are- James Wissell 11, Riley Allison 8, Finn Baker 6. Off the field we’ve had a couple of very successful events and the ‘reviews’, albeit self written, can be seen below.
On 15th of December the Cricket Club, along with Cherry Chatter, had a Christmas Show following two T20 games that were played against the Aldgate Cricket Club. The clubs also used this gathering as an opportunity to have an official opening of the new Playground and play area.
