Cherry Gardens Ironbank Recreation Ground and Club
We are a community owned sporting precinct for the local football, netball, cricket and tennis clubs. Everything you see here is 100% owned by our local community and we are a very family friendly organisation with a strong focus on junior programs where we encourage participation, gender equality, teamwork and growth of our youth in skills and ability.
The clubrooms are used most days of the week either for training, playing games in one of the sporting codes or just the local community using the oval, courts and equipment to keep fit, exercise the dog or just relax.
Meals are available on Thursday nights and after home games and everyone is welcome to join us any time.
On 15th of December the Cricket Club, along with Cherry Chatter, had a Christmas Show following two T20 games that were played against the Aldgate Cricket Club. The clubs also used this gathering as an opportunity to have an official opening of the new Playground and play area.
Believe it or not, we're already a month into the cricket season, it really sneaks up on you + This year on Saturday December 15th the Cricket Club is holding a T20 Double Header and this will be immediately followed by a Community Christmas Show complete with a visit from Santa for the kids.
We are very happy that the work has started on the upgrade to the playground area at the Recreation ground. At the moment there is a lot of earthworks going on (thanks to Moons Earthmoving and Concrete) including a new retaining wall that was needed to hold in the Softfall and new drainage and a lot of dirt removed in readiness for the new equipment that will be installed later in November. There are also new concrete paths.
Playing sport (and for us playing football) is a great way to spend time together as a community and of course everything feels better when you are winning. This year our club has come away with 2 Premierships which is an outstanding effort for the players, members and supporters.
Netball. End of season report. What another awesome day for our netball club hosting the Hills Assoc Grand Final games for the second year in a row. The weather was perfect, the courts sparkling and the great crowds gave it a carnival atmosphere.
Spring has Sprung, and our Winter sports are almost over + Home cooked meals will continue to be served on Thursday nights during Cricket and Summer Netball Seasons, take a night off, drop in for a meal and say G’day! As always, if you have any fundraising ideas or any Rec Ground business, please let me know.
The new playground plan between the club and courts is close to being finalised, we are aiming to have it completed for the summer. Did you know that the land that is now the Cherry Gardens Ironbank Recreation Ground was donated to the community by the Chapman Family in the 50’s and is STILL owned by YOU today!!
Exciting times at the football club as we near the end of the season. Very good chance that all our teams, with the exception of our U12 lads, will play finals and with only 2 games left of the minor round (as of August 7th) it looks very promising that the B’s will finish on top of the ladder and the A’s at least in second place and both these are great results for our club and the players.
The Cherry Gardens Ironbank Recreation Ground is going to be building a memorial stone pathway. We will be calling it the Athol Morgan memorial walkway. We have decided to sell Name Pavers that you are welcome to write your name, family name or a loved one you would like to remember.
Our football season is now at the halfway mark and we are about to start the second round of games against the rest of the competition. It is a bit of a mixed bag for the club with some teams doing really well but others struggling. That being said as a football club we are very happy with how we are travelling and proud of all our players, teams and support volunteers.
