We hope everyone’s winter is going well and it is good to report we still have been relatively quiet at the time of writing this article. The warning siren (pictured) is sounded at the Cherry Gardens station at 0800 every Friday to ensure it remains serviceable. If there is a local Cherry Gardens fire emergency, the siren will be sounded at that time to warn the area, otherwise there will be just the short test at 0800 on Friday.

I recently attended the biannual Australian Wildlife Rehabilitation Conference in Sydney. I took seven volunteers from Minton Farm, the majority of who were young ladies who had finished their honours at University last year and have come to Minton Farm to gain practical wildlife knowledge and experience. They all were highly engaged and motivated by the experience.

My neighbour and I (Della Rowley and Fiona Bennett from 316 Ackland Hill Rd) have just cleaned up the litter lying at the side of Ackland Hill Road, from 316 down to Wildheath Rd. We will continue up Ackland Hill Rd towards Ironbank, and Cherry Gardens if we get more volunteers.

The Cherry Gardens Uniting Church was officially opened in March 1849, after its members had met for some time in each other’s homes. In March 2019, there will be a special service to celebrate 170 years of continuous worship in the church building.

During our Tuesday working bee last month, our Friends group was visited by a film crew from Totally Wild, Network Ten’s national television series aimed at 8-16 year olds. The show covers stories on all sorts of environment and cultural topics in a fun and informative way.

We have received a number of barn owls recently, some still strengthening their wings. One was flushed from trees at Noarlunga by magpies, and flew from the road into a gym window.
