CFS Air Support

We have mentioned in recent issues our intention to write a history of CFS Region1 Air Operations Brigade at the Cherry Gardens airstrip. We will publish it by instalments in future issues of Cherry Chatter in the hope that readers: will find it interesting and will respond with any information or recollections that might help us to fill in the gaps.

Letter to the editor

Last Sunday, (April 25th 2021) we were invited to attend a small memorial service at Cherry Gardens to remember the landing at Anzac Cove and our Anzac soldiers at Gallipoli. We would like to commend the Committee on conducting a moving and reflective ceremony that encompassed all of the Anzac Story and extended to include all Service Personnel who have given their lives in action.

Airstrip Editorial Corner

With summer approaching we are looking to document some history of the Air Support activities that originated in Cherry Gardens. Cherry Gardens was at the forefront in development of the Air Support equipment and activities as the advent of aircraft to support the ground crews started in South Australia.

Editorial - March (pre-COVID-19)

Our CFS brigade, including the Air Support crew have been actively involved in all the major fires this season. Apart from the big fires we had 3 local fires in one week + It has been interesting to see Cherry Gardens in the news quite a lot this year. The Recreation Ground found themselves in the limelight as a player in the Sports Rorts affair, Community meeting about the boundary and petition to keep using the siren.

Book exchange

There is an organisation called “Little Free Library” which has about 90,000 book exchange locations around the world.So, we thought it might be a good idea to introduce a Book Exchange in our local area. We will be locating our Book Exchange at the Recreational Ground at the end of Cherry Gardens Road, between the Netball/Tennis clubrooms and the main clubroom.
