Football Club

So, this will be the final football club report for the 2019 season. Footy is done for the year and we have had the club presentation nights and the only thing left for 2019 is the AGM which will be held on November 3rd at the clubrooms starting 2pm. Everyone is always welcome to attend whether you want to be involved in the club or just be informed on how things are going.

As for season 2019 unfortunately none of our teams made it to the grand final this year. All teams ended up playing finals, but we just weren’t quite good enough in those last couple of games.

Our A’s finished 3rd and B’s finished 4th.

The Women’s team finished 3rd and the club actually ended up hosting the grand final for the women’s league and we had a full house for that game.

The 3 junior teams played the first round of finals and the U18’s progressed to the second round but got beaten. We were very happy with our lads and the efforts they put in and we believe this bears well for the future of the club.

We only had one moddies team this year, but they enjoyed themselves and we hope the kids will continue in 2020. We ran the Auskick programs at Coromandel Valley and Hawthorndene Primary Schools and this saw large numbers of kids joining in and learning a few footy skills and having a fun time. They had the opportunity to play a trial game at half time during one of our seniors home games.

Both Presentation nights were held at the Blackwood Golf Club who have been good supporters for us this year. Along with the player awards for each team we recognized a few special club people including:

  • Matthew Smith who was awarded Life Membership for playing 300 games of senior footy for the club and basically being a legend!

  • Will Muirden, captain of the A’s for reaching 150 games of senior footy

  • Jason Wooley for being our club volunteer of the year for all his tireless efforts around the club

We would not exist as a club without the many volunteers and members who do their bit to help us either on game day or in the background. Everyone on the committee, everyone who helps to get the teams out onto the oval each week for training and games, those who help out in the canteen, cooking the BBQ or manning the Bar all contribute to the sustainability of the club and we thank you!

Also a big shout out to our many valuable club sponsors. We appreciate your support and without you we would not exist. We constantly remind our members how important you are and we trust that wherever possible they use your business when the need arises. Thank you!

We received some grant funding and so we are now able to erect goal nets at the northern end of the oval. This work should be completed by mid November. Thanks to the Onkaparinga Council, the Office of Recreation and Sport and the Hackham Sports Club.

As with everything at the Football Club, Netball Club, Cricket Club, Tennis Club and Recreation Ground, everyone is welcome and we hope that all the residents of Cherry Gardens, Ironbank and Coromandel East remember that you the community own it and it is yours to enjoy and be a part of. Whether you just want to walk the dog (please pick up the dog poo), kick a footy, have a hit of cricket, shoot a few baskets or have a hit of tennis you are always welcomed and we want you to feel a part of what we are. There is a fantastic playground for the kids that we are proud of and want your kids to use it.

There are meals served nearly every Thursday evening and it is a great place to make friends, catch up with what’s going on and just feel a part of the community.

Hope to see you at the club, maybe turn up to the Football Club AGM on Nov 3rd, 2pm at the clubrooms or come along and watch a few home games next season
