Burning on Private Lands Program

In light of the recent bushfires in and around Cherry Gardens, we all seem even more aware of the importance of bushfire preparedness and I wanted to share with the community our experience with the Burning on Private Lands Program.

Moving to Cherry Gardens from Sydney a few years ago was a steep learning curve when it comes to understanding the best ways to be “bushfire ready”; it can be challenging and overwhelming. The good news is help is available!

After discussing things with the wonderful Cherry Gardens CFS brigade and National Parks, we enrolled in the “Burning on Private Lands Program” and after almost 2 years, a prescribed burn was conducted on our land and 3 neighbouring properties in November 2019. Everything was prepared and undertaken very professionally - before, during and after the burn.

The regeneration is impressive, it is reassuring to see fuel load drastically reduced and we have gained skills in managing the land along the way.

We couldn't have achieved the same result without the dedicated work and support of the program. We are very grateful, and hope this might help some of you.
